The Down Syndrome Research Institute has a long history of providing summer school/camp experiences to young people with Down syndrome, and cooperating with university-sponsored, longitudinal research projects on key aspects of Down syndrome. Founded in 2004, the Down Syndrome Research Institute (DSRI) ran summer schools that incorporated and tested experimental models and researched the effectiveness of cutting-edge methodology. It had an ongoing relationship with a major Canadian university to conduct scientific research, which was recently published. DSRI also received provincial funding to educate Ontario parents and teachers on the research findings that uncovered optimal educational and parenting techniques for young people with Down syndrome.
As one of the founding members of The Down Syndrome Foundation, the Down Syndrome Research Institute will have an organizational home in which to pursue important questions and areas of research, and collect and publish data-driven insights that will inform leadership, strategy, policy, and sustained action for the Foundation and support our community partners.
